Name a few of your favorite black movies. What are they? “ATL,” “Boyz n the hood,” “Hustle and Flow,” “Love and Basketball,” “Don’t be a menace to south central,” maybe all of the Friday movies. These movies are the popular choice for a lot of black people in my community. I have watched these movies more than once and noticed that there is a similar aspect between all of these movies. I will give you a hint…women. If you have not already guessed what I was thinking then I will tell you.
In every black movie, the women always look the same. The women carry out the idea of what a black woman’s body should look like. These features include wide hips, a slim stomach, decent breasts, and of course a big butt. According to the media, the main feature of a black woman is a big butt. This is how a black women’s beauty is depicted and defined in the media.
I remember in the movie “Think like a man,” this issue was bought to my attention. When Terrance was talking about his girl to his friends, they asked if she had booty. This was the only aspect they were interested in. Also in “ATL” there was a character called “Big Booty Judy.” Judy was only known by her butt. In the whole movie they never showed her face, only her butt. This showed how and why she was casted in the movie. In “Boyz N the Hood,” the only females the main characters would give their attention to was the one’s with the big butt.
In the black community, a woman’s beauty or sexiness is defined by the size of her butt and the color of her skin. I know a few guys that have only dated a woman for her big butt than her personality. These relationships have ended quite badly. I have also seen girls being ridiculed for not having these similar features. Why is it that I don’t see thin girls in rap videos, or fat girls, chubby girls, girls with an apple shape, a pear shape, or girls with a flat butt?. Society fails to realize that there are many different sizes and shapes.
A little black girl growing up in this world with a different shape would wonder why she doesn’t see girls like her on TV. She will wonder why she doesn’t receive the same attention as the girls with the bigger butts. She might even wonder if she is beautiful. She will start to not love herself and believe something is wrong with her. Who can she look up to? Then a boy will start to follow others and only date women cause of their curvaceous bodies.
We as Black people are so obsessed with a woman’s butt that we even have different names for it. Some may call it a “dunk,” or some may call it a “cake.” MTO even prides a woman of her body than her face. We have so many rap songs where the artist cannot go without saying the word ass. We have too many rap songs where it’s all about males disrespecting females like “Round of applause,” “No Hands,” “Tip Drill,” “Rack City,” “House Party,” “H.A.M,” etc..
I hope that I have opened your eyes to a very controversial and stereotypical issue in Hollywood and music. Hollywood does not mention this, but every black girl is beautiful in their own way.

First off, I would like to start off this blog by giving Tim Story, director of “Think like a man” congratulations on the movie. Story did an incredible job on making a successful “Black” movie. His previous work was “Barbershop,” and the Fantastic Four movies. This movie was released on April 20th, 2012 and if you have not seen the movie then I advise that you buy it on DVD. The film lived up to its reputation as being hilarious and a great date movie. Even though the story line was thin, Story still made me interested throughout every turn of the movie. I was always at the edge of my seat to know how the couples would use Steve Harvey’s book to their advantage.
My favorite couple in the movie was Lauren and Dominic. Taraji P. Henson played Lauren and Michael Ealy played Dominic. I loved how their problems were very realistic. Mr. Ealy played the poor character who loved unconditionally and Ms. Henson played the rich character. I could relate to Ms. Henson character by not wanting to lower her expectations when finding a man. However Steve Harvey was right when saying a man’s love should be the only expectation that should count. We as people should not look for a partner based on their attributes, but rather the love that they will provide for us. After seeing how the two characters of Lauren and Dominic learned to love each other in the end, I decided to check out the book online.
Steve Harvey’s “Think like a man” is shooting to the top of the best sellers list. I agree with Oprah when she said “I love everything it has to say.” According to Steve, “This book is to purely empower women.” I advise all of you ladies who are reading this to go out and BUY this book because it will change the way you think. This book will help you in relationships and it actually makes sense. I cannot tell you about how many times my girlfriends told me about how to handle a guy and it never worked. The reason why I love this book is because it’s written from a man who has had a lot of experience in the world. Steve only wants to help women and empower them in their relationships. I guarantee this book will work if you are able to listen to what Steve has to say and act upon it.
I would also like to say that it’s nice a black movie has made a lot of money. On the weekend of 4/29/2012, “Think like a man” made $18 million and topped “The Hunger Games” after it has been No. 1 for a month. Mr. Harvey and Mr. Story really did a great job when working together to make this movie. Everyone I knew said it was hilarious, realistic, and some even went to check out the book.
This movie is no longer in theaters but I hope the next black movie that hits the theaters will be very successful. Even if we do not have time to go watch the movie, we should make time. There are very good black actors and actresses out there that we should support. Let’s show Hollywood that black movies are not done and can make a lot of money. Let’s us save and put together our money to watch it in theaters. Let us give Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp a run for their money as well as Steven Spielberg. I also know that some of you may want to get the bootleg from that man that sells it on the corner but let us make a difference. We need to rise as a community and show that Black Movies in Hollywood can make as much as the Avengers movie. I know that I will be in line for the next black movie and I will bring all of my friends. I hope this has inspired you to do the same. We can make a difference.
