Name a few of your
favorite black movies. What are they? “ATL,” “Boyz n the hood,” “Hustle and
Flow,” “Love and Basketball,” “Don’t be a menace to south central,” maybe all
of the Friday movies. These movies are the popular choice for a lot of black
people in my community. I have watched these movies more than once and noticed
that there is a similar aspect between all of these movies. I will give you a
hint…women. If you have not already guessed what I was thinking then I will
tell you.
In every black movie,
the women always look the same. The women carry out the idea of what a black
woman’s body should look like. These features include wide hips, a slim
stomach, decent breasts, and of course a big butt. According to the media, the
main feature of a black woman is a big butt. This is how a black women’s beauty
is depicted and defined in the media.
I remember in the movie
“Think like a man,” this issue was bought to my attention. When Terrance was
talking about his girl to his friends, they asked if she had booty. This was
the only aspect they were interested in. Also in “ATL” there was a character
called “Big Booty Judy.” Judy was only known by her butt. In the whole movie
they never showed her face, only her butt. This showed how and why she was
casted in the movie. In “Boyz N the Hood,” the only females the main characters
would give their attention to was the one’s with the big butt.
In the black community,
a woman’s beauty or sexiness is defined by the size of her butt and the color
of her skin. I know a few guys that have only dated a woman for her big butt
than her personality. These relationships have ended quite badly. I have also
seen girls being ridiculed for not having these similar features. Why is it
that I don’t see thin girls in rap videos, or fat girls, chubby girls, girls
with an apple shape, a pear shape, or girls with a flat butt?. Society fails to
realize that there are many different sizes and shapes.
A little black girl
growing up in this world with a different shape would wonder why she doesn’t
see girls like her on TV. She will wonder why she doesn’t receive the same
attention as the girls with the bigger butts. She might even wonder if she is
beautiful. She will start to not love herself and believe something is wrong
with her. Who can she look up to? Then a boy will start to follow others and
only date women cause of their curvaceous bodies.
We as Black people are
so obsessed with a woman’s butt that we even have different names for it. Some
may call it a “dunk,” or some may call it a “cake.” MTO even prides a woman of
her body than her face. We have so many rap songs where the artist cannot go
without saying the word ass. We have too many rap songs where it’s all about
males disrespecting females like “Round of applause,” “No Hands,” “Tip Drill,”
“Rack City,” “House Party,” “H.A.M,” etc..
I hope that I have
opened your eyes to a very controversial and stereotypical issue in Hollywood
and music. Hollywood does not mention this, but every black girl is beautiful
in their own way.
